May 5 is Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (observed annually on May 5).
Red Dress Day honours the memories of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada. Métis artist Jaime Black helped inspire the red dress movement, where red dresses are hung from windows and trees to represent the pain and loss felt by loved ones and survivors.
From April 18-30 our division Indigenous Wellness Facilitator, Josh Cross, will visit each of our schools to educate and bring awareness to the Red Dress Day Movement. Mr. Josh will share a presentation with staff and students and facilitate an activity, followed by a march with traditional drumming and ending with a moment of silence for those impacted.
"I believe it is important to recognize this significant day as a division because regardless of one’s race, these issues can affect all our lives. I know it has impacted me and my family personally as well; my hope from this is to heal, forgive, pray and remember those lost or still missing. We used to be silenced. We used to be shunned. We used to be erased. We used to be ashamed. But we are these things no longer. We are resilient warriors and we won’t be forgotten any longer." - Josh Cross, Indigenous Wellness Facilitator

Dear Fine Arts 8 & 9 Families,
As you are all aware, our field trip to Calgary back in March was unfortunately canceled due to weather. We are happy to report that we have come up with an alternative trip for our fine arts students. On Wednesday, May 29th the Grade 8 and 9 Fine Arts students will be heading to Calgary!
The plan is to depart the school at 7am and return by 5:30 pm to the school. We will be heading to Calgary’s Stage West to enjoy a buffet meal and watch a professional performance.
A little background from Stage West about the musical “Beautiful - the Carole King Story” that we will be seeing: The inspiring true story of Carole King's journey from teenage songwriter to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Before she was hit-maker Carole King — she was Carole Klein, a spunky, young songwriter from Brooklyn with a unique voice. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own life-changing, trailblazing success with Tapestry, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical takes you back to where it all began — and takes you on the ride of a lifetime.
Once again, performing, viewing, and analyzing are part of all Fine Art curricula and we are proud to meet these educational objectives by offering this trip. Aside from packing your own snacks for the bus ride, there are no other associated costs. This trip will be paid for using the St. Mary’s Fine Art Academy program fees. The Fine Art faculty, and an administrator, will travel with students and therefore, we do not need any other help with supervision.
Itinerary / Schedule - Wednesday, May 29th
7am - Depart St. Mary’s School
10am- Approximate arrival time at Stage West (727 - 42 Avenue SE Calgary AB T2G 1Y8) for brunch buffet, and show
2pm - Depart Stage West and drive back to Medicine Hat
5:30 pm - Approx. arrival time back at the school
Please remember to bring snacks for the bus ride and to dress in clothes that are appropriate for a formal performance at Stage West (Stage West prefers no shorts, t-shirts, or athletic wear).
If you have the following, please bring: your phone, phone charger, and back-up power source. We will have all students contact their parents when the buses reach Suffield so pickup from the school is quick and easy.
Please complete the attached permission form and return it to Mrs. Lukacs at the school by May 27th. Keep this letter for your own records. Please contact the school if you have any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to a great trip!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lukacs
