General Information

The Sports and Wellness Academy at St.Mary’s School is a unique program designed for students in Grades 6 through 9. This Academy offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a wide range of sports and wellness activities while building valuable skills, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for health and fitness. The goal of the program is to inspire active, balanced lives while developing well-rounded, confident, and resilient students who thrive in new challenges, embrace the spirit of teamwork, and grow in faith and service to others.

In any given academic year, students will explore a wide range of sports and activities that may include: golf, baseball, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, wall climbing, dance, yoga, swimming, skating, fitness training, snowshoeing, hiking, tennis, track and field, and curling. Furthermore, students will learn sports psychology, nutrition, sports photography, kinesiology taping, careers in sport, and other educational modules.

This program meets the needs of many students: those students who have a keen interest in sports and being active, and those students who see themselves pursuing a career in the sporting field. Furthermore, students also have additional opportunities to experience Regular-stream option programming such as computers, foods, shop, etc. (see Wellness above).

To protect the integrity of the program, class sizes are capped and therefore often operate at full capacity. In these situations, students wanting to enter the program are placed on a waiting list and currently enrolled students must meet certain standards. Therefore, to maintain the integrity of the Sports & Wellness program, parents and students must continuously strive to meet the following:

  1. All Sports & Wellness Academy fees must be paid in full or be arranged to be paid in instalments. In extenuating circumstances, arrangements may be made to have fees waived but these arrangements need to be made in advance.

  2. Students must maintain regular and punctual attendance at school including all off-site activities.

  3. Students must be an active participant in all Sports & Wellness Academy programming.  Active participation is considered to be the regular and ongoing participation in the activities of the Sports & Wellness Academy both on and off campus.

  4. Students must maintain an exemplary attitude, effort, work ethic, and interest in Sports & Wellness.

  5. Students will maintain positive behaviour in accordance with the MHCBE Student Code of Conduct. This includes the responsibility of being an ambassador of St. Mary’s School.

  6. Students must maintain a level of good academic standing or show evidence of academic accountability and improvement.

Student performance in the Sports & Wellness Academy will be reviewed at the end of each reporting period, including the end of the academic year. Students found to be struggling with any of the above criteria may be required to meet with Sports & Wellness faculty, meet with administration, put on a period of probation, and/or be removed from the program. This agreement is subject to the discretion of the Sports & Wellness faculty and administration.  Administrators reserve the right to have the final say in student programming.

Selection Process

In the event that the number of students enrolling in a particular grade exceeds the capacity of the program, students in good standing (see Sports & Wellness Academy Standards) will be selected in the following order:

  1. Current Grade 6, 7, and 8 St. Mary’s School Sports & Wellness Academy students

  2. Current Grade 5 students registered at and attending a Medicine Hat Catholic school

  3. Current Grade 6, 7, and 8 St. Mary’s School students in a different program

  4. Current Grade 6, 7, and 8 Notre Dame students

  5. New Catholic students to Medicine Hat Catholic once accepted into the division

  6. All other new students to Medicine Hat Catholic once accepted into the division

Once a class has reached capacity, all remaining students will be placed on a waiting list. In order to maintain a spot on the waiting list, students must be registered at St. Mary’s as a non-academy student. As spots become available, students will be transferred into the Academy Program.

Registration opens on February 1. All selection process criteria (see above) remain in force during open registration. On March 1, any further registrations - including those from existing Sports & Wellness Academy students - will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Administrators reserve the right to have the final say in student programming. Parents will be notified by email regarding acceptance into the Sports & Wellness Academy program each spring.

Staff of the Sports and Wellness Academy

Mr. Brendan Lutz

Brendan Lutz brings a wealth of experience and passion to the new multi-sports academy. A decorated athlete himself, Brendan has competed at a high school level in a variety of sports, including volleyball, basketball, badminton, and soccer. His impressive five-year college career saw him excel in both volleyball and soccer, earning him numerous accolades, including two MVP awards in each sport, two Male Athlete of the Year awards, and an ACAC All-Conference award in soccer.

Beyond his playing career, Brendan boasts over 20+ years of coaching experience across multiple sports and levels. He has made significant contributions at both the college and provincial levels, most notably in volleyball. His coaching achievements include assisting a college team to a bronze medal at the CCAA National Championships and guiding a 19U team to a gold medal at the National Team Challenge Cup. In addition to his college and provincial experience, Brendan has also coached volleyball, badminton, and soccer at the high school level. Brendan's current coaching roles further demonstrate his commitment to developing young athletes. He is currently coaching the "A" girls volleyball team at St. Mary's School, assisting with the Men's volleyball team at Medicine Hat College, and contributing to the development of a 18U boys volleyball club team in Medicine Hat. Brendan's dedication to athletic development and his proven track record of success make him a valuable asset to the academy and its student-athletes.

Mr. Brock Hale

I'm thrilled to be a part of the brand-new Sports and Wellness program and can't wait to share my passion for sports with all of you! Sports have been a huge part of my life since I was a child, and I've played everything from soccer, basketball, and volleyball to track and field, gymnastics, and football. I even still enjoy jumping on my trampoline and flipping off of things when I can!

In high school, I had the privilege of playing basketball at CHHS, where I helped lead my team to provincials two years in a row, marking their first appearance in over 20 years. I also qualified for High School Provincials in track and field. After high school, I played one year of basketball for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers and have stayed involved in sports ever since. Over the past 10 years, I’ve coached volleyball, basketball, and track and field at St. Mary’s, and I’ve also worked with several community programs, such as Panther's Track and Field Club, Golden Hawks Basketball Club, and Jasper Volleyball Camps.

Sports, activity, and challenges are what drive me, and I love exploring new adventures. Recently, I trained for and ran my first marathon, and my brother and I placed second in our local food bank's Amazing Race for Hunger. Fun fact: My four brothers and I even appeared on Family Feud Canada and won $10,000!

Teaching in this new program is an exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to bring my love for sports and wellness to the classroom, helping students discover the joy and benefits of an active lifestyle.

Miss Leilani Leighton

Ms. Leighton is the Grade 6 Sports Academy teacher, and she is absolutely thrilled to be working with the students this year! Sports have always been a big part of her life—she grew up playing volleyball, soccer, track & field, badminton, softball, and golf. In fact, she was a student at St. Mary’s, where she not only played on multiple sports teams but also discovered her passion for sports and coaching.

During high school, Ms. Leighton was part of the McCoy soccer team and competed in badminton. After high school, she continued her soccer journey by signing with the MHC Rattlers, where she trained at the college level.

Ms. Leighton has a lot of coaching experience, currently coaching badminton, soccer, and volleyball at St. Mary’s, where she has coached a badminton team to a South Zone Junior High Championship victory!

Outside of sports, Ms. Leighton has a strong passion for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking. She loves spending time in nature, whether exploring new trails, being out on the water, or playing golf. Staying active and enjoying the outdoors is something she values deeply, and she is excited to share her enthusiasm for sports and fitness with her students this year.

Mr. Wyatt Sehn

Wyatt Sehn brings a diverse athletic background and a proven coaching record to the multi-sports academy. A multi-sport athlete throughout high school, Wyatt competed in hockey, basketball, volleyball, golf, and track and field. His athletic achievements include being named the 2011 Senior Boys Volleyball Rookie of the Year, winning a Zones Bronze Medal in individual boys golf in 2013, and earning the Golf Team MVP award the same year. Wyatt played basketball for the McCoy Colts for four seasons, including a JV season in grade 9, contributing to two league championships during that time. He also competed for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Golf Team in 2013-2014.

Wyatt's coaching experience spans over 10 years in basketball, ranging from youth development camps to competitive club and school teams. He has led the St. Mary's "A" Girls basketball team to back-to-back league finals in 2023 and 2024, culminating in a league championship in the 2023-2024 season – a feat not achieved at St. Mary's in over 20 years. Wyatt has also served as the St. Mary's Golf Team Coach since 2018, further demonstrating his commitment to developing young athletes across different sports.
